The 1996 Hans Christian Andersen Awards have been announced by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The winners are: I. Writing:
Uri Orlev, Israel
Books by Mr. Orlev translated into English and published in the U.S.A. include: The Island on Bird Street; Lady with the Hat; Lydia, Queen of Palestine; and The Man from the Other Side. Each was translated by Hillel Halkin and first published in the U.S.A. by Houghton Mifflin. II. Illustration:
Klaus Ensikat, Germany
Books illustrated Mr. Ensikat can generally be characterized as
"classics," and include poems by Edward Lear; the folktale Bremen Town Musicians; a Chekhov story (Kashtanka); a Rudyard Kipling story; Alice in Wonderland; and Gogol's The Coat. None of his books have been published in English language editions in the U.S.A. at this time.
