Greetings from North Dakota where we still have snow banks in our yards. This is my first time at writing a message, but have enjoyed reading everyones' comments from the different books. I wanted to comment on how I have used Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea in my 5th grade classroom. I have used this book has a springboard to both letter writing and with geography and traveling across the United States. I teach the states and capitals to my 5th grade so this works great for an extra activity. After reading the book we pretend we are going on a trip we depart from Munich and usually head to Disney World or some other place the kids would like to visit. I then tell them they will have to pick a place on the way to our destination. Each student after getting their location researches what they would see that day they stop. They then have to write back to me at the school. I have made a master of a large postcard that has a place to write a short note telling about the city and a place to color a picture. They students really enjoy this book.
