Have you all been out in the spring weather somersaulting down the nearest hill? You've been so quiet since Nina pointed out the special exuberance of the somersault race Petey initiated in Scooter!
It's important to be reminded of Petey and of Elana's other friends at 514 Melon Hill Avenue. In your experience, how do children respond to Petey? What do they say after reading about this absolutely remarkable character?
What do they say about some of the other kids in the Melon Hill Houses - as Elana first talks about them: Adrienne (her parents own the store; her mom is going to have a baby real soon), Jimmy Beck
(big mouth), Vinh (third floor), Eduard (good on his skateboard), Siobhan (other class in school) and Beryl (wears lipstick already).
And what do they say about Elana's relationship to some of the adults in the apartment community, especially to Mrs. Greiner - which brings us back to Petey. Let's think about Petey and about Mrs. Greiner; about Petey and Elana; and about Elana and the adults. Come on, "speak up!" ... Ginny
