STRANGE CHARACTERS PLOT THIRD MADISON BOOK FAIR

The characters are authors, booksellers, publishers and costumed book characters. The plot is the east side of Madison's Capital Square. They're all part of the city's third annual book fair, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 1996.

More than 5,000 people attended last year's fair, which included top authors like Larry Watson, whose book Montana 1948 was favorably reviewed in the New York Times, Joan D. Vinge, award-winning science fiction author, and Jacqueline Mitchard, who has already sold movie rights for her upcoming novel, Deep End of the Ocean.

Costumed characters from the Jane Austen Society were among more than 50 performers on three stages. The event also featured over 80 exhibitors from six states, including publishers, booksellers and other book related vendors. City blocks will be filled with literary excitement, promoting reading for the whole family. Fair organizers say this year's event promises to be even bigger.

Madison ranks among the top to cities in the nation in bookstores per capita. Readers bought more than $34 million dollars worth of books in 1992, according for figures compiled by the American Booksellers Association. More books are sold in Madison each year than in much larger cities like Milwaukee, Honolulu or Omaha.

Proceeds from the Book Fair support the Summer Reading Program of the Dane County Library Service. pass it on.
