My response to _Slot Machine_ was one of pained sympathy for all the characters.
It was the first book I've ever read that made me think maybe, at times, male adolescence is even worse than the female version. The boys I knew when we were teenagers worked pretty hard to hide their insecurities from everyone around them, including girls. I wish I had been able to read _Slot Machine_ back then, because I think I might have understood the aliens from 'Planet Boy' a little better.
