I need to correct the impression Judy Zuckerman (Hi, Judy!) left that the Center for Children's Books is no longer in existence. U of Chicago's Graduate Library School may be history, but the CCB moved, along with its BULLETIN, to the U of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign (moo). Betsy Hearne is the director, assisted by the as-yet-unknown new editor of the BULLETIN. I actually think this is a better place for the CCB because we, like you Wisconsin folks, are now part of a state institution, mandated to provide service on a wider and more interesting basis than was expected/allowed at the University of Chicago. now, if we just had funding . . .
Judy's recollections of the establishment of the O'Dell Award are correct. That award has two things going for it which I think are essential in establishing a prize that can compete with the Newbery/Caldecotts for attention: authority (in that the legendary Zena Sutherland gives the award, and that it was established by O'Dell) and money
(it's a 5000 dollar prize, which, at least at the time of the award`s establishment, was the most money given anywhere for a children's book award).
