Caldecott discussion

I'm glad to hear so many past Caldecott and Newbery committee members responding to the concerns I posted a few days ago. Carla Kozak mentioned that, while in other years she's not been sure if she thought the winners were the *most* distinguished, the year that she served, she was sure: "in 1994, I *knew* the winner had to be Grandfather's Journey. No doubt in my mind!" I think this attests to what Katy Horning said about serving on the Newbery committee: "I have to say that when you serve on the Newbery or Caldecott committee, you learn to trust the process these committees use every year. You learn that all of your fellow committee members take their charge very seriously and you also understand what it's like to read -- really, really READ -- everything that's eligible for the award that year. "

It helps others of us to "trust the process" when you can share your experiences of it with us -- and it addresses my concern about general lack of understanding about the process. My appreciation of the awards deepens with my understanding of it, and both have skyrocketed from listening to committee members' experiences, and participating in mock discussions. Thanks!
