In general, when I'm working with the public - with kids, teachers, parents, college students - I can't say that I discuss any book in the remarkable depth that a listserv like CCBC-net and the actual CCBC book discussions allow. But as a children's literature specialist for my community, I hunger for the kind of perspectives, details, meanderings, laser-sharp insights, eye to detail or finesse within a book, glimpses and even outright luxuriating in the craft and art of authoring and illustrating books for youth that the book discussions in this larger forum provide. So much is revealed, whether I completely agree with comments or not. I re-approach books after discussions and bring my "new" eyes to the pages and am always richer for the insights that people have shared.
This translates for me into more insightful recommendations and brief
"booktalks" that go into into the day-to?y floor work at the library. My broadened perspective answers the many needs that people bring to me in their quest for the right book for each reader. People who come in rely on the youth department staff for recommendations, not reviews. The CCBC book discussions allow me to recommend with better understanding. And not only am I richer for the insights, but so are the people who come in seeking that special book for themselves.
