The Mildred L. Batchelder Award is given to a U.S. publisher for publishing an outstanding translated book for children (children: up to/including age 14 years) during the preceding year. To be eligible for the Batchelder Award, a publisher must have arranged for the first translation into English of a book of substantial length.
The 1996 ALA/ALSC Mildred L. Batchelder Award winner this year is Houghton Mifflin for publishing The Lady with the Hat written in Hebrew by Uri Orlev and translated into English by Hillel Halkin.
Two other publishers have been singled out for their notable translated books, as well: 1) Henry Holt and Company for publishing Damned Strong Love: The True Story of Willi G. and Stefan K. written in German by Lutz van Dijk and translated into English by Elizabeth D. Crawford; and 2) Star of Fear, Star of Hope written in French by Jo Hoestlandt, translated into English by Mark Polizzotti, and illustrated by Johanna Kang.
Although each of these three books might be described in a general way as holocaust literature, they differ from each other significantly. I hope you have had an opportunity to find and read each. Marc Aronson is the U.S. editor of Damned Strong Love (Henry Holt). I have corresponded via e-mail with Marc about commenting on CCBC-NET about acquiring and publishing Damned Strong Love, and he has agreed to do this. Marc Aronson is a senior editor at Henry Holt and Company Books for Young Readers and has a doctorate in American cultural history from New York University. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to share your responses to reading Damned Strong Love (or either of the other two books listed above) as well as your questions. And... if other editors and publishers in the CCBC-NET community want to comment, as well, please join in.
