Last night 27 teachers, librarians, students and faculty gathered in the CCBC to discuss ten books among the 70 or so books eligible for the 1995 Americas Award. This was the first CCBC Americas Award Book Discussion, although the CCBC has been distributing the award/distinction information since the award was originated two years ago. The CCBC collaborated with the Madison Metropolitan School District through working with Eliza Dresang; in that way, some of the participants received professional development credit for four months of guided reading of Latino Literature for Children and Young Adults in addition to participating last evening.
After an overview of the award presented by the Americas Children's Book Award Chair Julie Kline (Center for Latin America, UW-Milwaukee), we divided into three discussion groups after which we met in a large group to continue the discussion. The discussions were spirited, raising ideas critical to evaluation and to understandings of the Americas Award. We took one written ballot at the end of the evening; everyone voted for three books, ranking her/his votes in priority order. The outcomes were as follows: Winners (a tie):
1. Tonight, By Sea by Frances Temple (Orchard)
2. An Island Like You by Judith Ortiz Cofer
(Orchard) Commended Books (a tie):
1. Chato's Kitchen written by Gary Soto and
illustrated by Susan Guevara (Putnam)
2. The Tree Is Older Than You Are: A Bilingual
Gathering of Poems & Stories From Mexico With
Paintings By Mexican Artists (Simon &
Schuster)
The CCBC will certainly want to provide such a rich opportunity for discussion each year from now on. We encourage you to think about doing this in your communities, too.
Before long you will be able to find out the outcomes of the actual 1995 Amercias Award deliberations; they are to be announced sometime this spring, but no date has been set for the announcement. The CCBC will distribute this information as soon as it becomes available.
