Marc, what you describe doesn't sound anything like a YA version of the Newbery and I don't think it would ever be considered as such, either inside or outside the profession. So perhaps there's still room for a YALSA award based on literary quality after all. Or perhaps YALSA simply doesn't want an award based on literary merit, although I can't imagine why this would be. Is there anyone out there who's active in YALSA (which for those of you who aren't up on library acronyms stands for Young Adult Library Services Association and is a division of the American Library Association) who can give us some more insight into YALSA's position? And would YALSA mind if some other group such as the National Book Award folks moved in on
"their" turf?
