Following the CCBC Batchelder Award Discussion of seven books on Friday, January 12, we agreed that we particularly admire: 1) Dancing on the Bridge of Avignon by Ida Vos. Translated from the Dutch by Terese Edelstein and Inez Smidt. U.S. ed: Houghton Mifflin, 1995. (Winner) 2) Damned Strong Love: The True Story of Willi G. and Stephan K. by Lutz Van Dijk. Translated from the German by Elizabeth D. Crawford. U.S. ed: Henry Holt, 1995. (Honor Book)
Have any of you read either of these books? Comments?
Perhaps the U.S.editor of Damned Strong Love would like to comment on bringing that fine book to the U.S.A. How about it, Marc?
The year 1995 was a "big" year for translated children's books in the U.S.A. In some years, there are only 2-3 translated books of substantial length making their first appearance in English. It's essential to pay attention to translated books every year. The Batchelder Award honors the publisher of the outstanding translated book of the year, because it's at considerable financial risk that U.S. publishers invest in books without the name recognition that seems to be necessary for many books to survive in this country. Some of the CCBC-NET subscribers live elsewhere. What is your experience with translated books in your nation, Perry?
We did not intend that all but one of the books read for this discussion would concern the Holocaust. That was a coincidence creating powerful reading and the opportunity for many comparisons.
The above two books will be in CCBC CHOICES 1995.
