As we reach the end of January, I want to remind everyone of the topics for our upcoming discussions on CCBC-Net. During February we will discuss the ALA Award winners for 1996 which were announced on January 22 at the ALA Midwinter meeting in San Antonio. We do not see this as an opportunity to "second-guess" the committees, but rather as a chance to discuss the books chosen by the Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King and Batchelder Awards committee. We will devote one week to the winners of each of these four awards, as follows:
Week of Feb. 4 Caldecott Medal:
"Officer Buckle and Gloria" by Peggy Rathmann (Putnam) and Honor Books:
"Alphabet City" by Stephen T. Johnson (Viking)
"The Faithful Friend" illus. by Brian Pinkney, written by Robert D. San Souci (Simon & Schuster)
"Tops & Bottoms" by Janet Stevens (Harcourt)
"Zin! Zin! Zin! a Violin" illus. by Marjorie Priceman, written by Lloyd Moss (Simon & Schuster)
Week of Feb 11 Newbery Medal:
"The Midwife's Apprentice" by Karen Cushman (Clarion) and Honor Books:
"The Great Fire" by Jim Murphy (Scholastic)
"The Watsons Go to Birmingham -- 1963" by Christopher Paul Curtis
(Delacorte)

"Yolonda's Genius" by Carol Fenner (Margaret K. McElderry)
Week of Feb 18: Coretta Scott King Awards
Writing: "Her Stories" by Virginia Hamilton (Blue Sky/Scholastic)
and Honor books:
"From the Notebooks of Melanin Sun" by Jacqueline Woodson (Blue Sky/Scholastic)

and Honor Books:

"Her Stories" illus. by Leo and Diane Dillon, written by Virginia Hamilton. (Blue Sky/Scholastic)
Week of Feb 25: Batchelder Award:
"The Lady with the Hat" by Uri Orlev, translated from the Hebrew by Hillel Halkin. (Houghton Mifflin)

(Henry Holt)
"Star of Fear, Star of Hope" written by Jo Hoestlandt, illus. by Johanna Kang, translated from the French by Mark Polizzotti. (Walker)
As we discuss the 1996 ALA award books, we'll be happy to answer any questions about how books get chosen for the various awards. Many of our subscribers have served on these committees in the past and we welcome them to join in any discussion how the committees work.
In March we'll discuss "Slot Machine" by Chris Lynch (HarperCollins), an outstanding young adult novel published last year. A CCBC-Net subscriber has also requested that we facilitate a discussion on the definition of young adult literature. We'll plan this discussion in March, using the Batchelder Honor Book "Damned Strong Love" and "Slot Machine" as examples. Of course, you'll be welcome to cite examples of your own in the course of the discussion. We also recommend Marc Aronson's fine article "The YA Novel Is Dead, and Other Fairly Stupid Tales" (School Library Journal, Jan 1995, pp.367) as general background for our discussion of young adult literature.
In April, we plan to discuss the books of Vera B. Williams, including
"A Chair for My Mother," "More, More, More, Said the Baby" "Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe," "Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea" and "Scooter." (all published by Greenwillow)
