The first CCBC-NET book discussion of 1996 features the 195-page novel Protecting Marie by Kevin Henkes published by Greenwillow in 1995 (0h8958-2) $15.00 USA.
What a season to think about a novel filled with images and activities of Winter! The opening chapter of Protecting Marie takes place during on "a dense, moist December evening. The sky was purplish gray, and light. Fanny knew it would snow. She could almost hear it." (page 9) Which passages reflect this season in the Upper Midwest U.S.A. for you?
We realize that some of you out there live in places such as Florida and California! Regardless - where do you find images of Winter in Protecting Marie?
One other matter. Yes, Protecting Marie is set in Madison, Wisconsin, where the author now lives and where the CCBC is located. Yes, Kevin Henkes once worked at the CCBC while he was a studying Art and also Literature at UW-Madison. Is it possible for us to have an objective discussion of a book set in our city or state, written by someone we know? This question comes up at the CCBC now and then. Over the years, we've strived to maintain a professional approach to books and authors originating in our region. We attempt to be candid and unbiased in CCBC discussions of all books. We try not to play games or favorites. We're told that we generally succeed. We selected Protecting Marie for the January on CCBC-NET because we are confident it's worth everyone's time and attention. We're eager to find out what you're thinking and wondering, now that you've read it, too. So, please continue to make candid, thoughtful comments during this and future CCBC-NET discussions. Next? ... Ginny
