I just finished _Protecting Marie_ and I thought that it was a good read. The father made me very uncomfortable and I found him scarey. Fanny did a remarkable job in protecting herself from him. Like Cynthia Rylant, Henkes books for older children--Words of stone, (I have read others, but can't remember the names. I think one had zebra in the title and was about decorating a room for a new baby.) have twists to them that reach difficult subjects. Both of these writers do excellent, straight forward picture books that really contain none of the darker reaches that their novels do. Now that am not in elementary school, I wonder about the appeal of _Protecting Marie_ and books like it for young readers. Michele
