Before we get into a discussion of the books that won ALA Awards in 1996, I'd like to announce that CCBC Director Ginny Moore Kruse received the 1996 ALA's Association of Library Service to Children Distinguished Service Award, which is awarded each year to an individual for "significant contribution to children's services and ALSC." Any of you who have had an opportunity to work on an ALSC committee with Ginny or to hear her speak about children's and young adult literature or to know of her pioneering work in intellectual freedom or to participate in anything Ginny has had a hand in planning know that her contributions to our field have indeed been significant. Congratulations, Ginny!
