If you plan to attend the American Library Association Midwinter Conference, take advantage of the opportunity to meet and hear Naomi Shihab Nye speak and read from her poetry. This is an open invitation to all who might be interested. The event is sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY), of which the ALA is a patron member. The program featuring Naomi Shihab Nye will take place on Friday, Jan. 19, 8:00 - 9:30pm in the Mariott RiverCenter, Conference Rooms 13 & 14. Naomi Shihab Nye is recognized across the nation and beyond as a distinguished poet. She was featured on Bill Moyers' 1995 television series The Language of Life: A Festival of Poets and in the book based on the series - same title (Doubleday, 1995). In addition to her own published volumes of poetry for adults, Naomi Shihab Nye is the compiler of two handsome anthologies of poetry for older children and young adults. Her new anthology is The Tree Is Older Than You Are: A Bilingual Gathering Of Poems And Stories From Mexico With Paintings By Mexican Artists. The earlier anthology, This Same Sky: A Collection of Poems From Around The World, contains poems by poets from nations other than the U.S.A. Ms. Nye is the author of two picture book texts: Benito's Dream Bottle and Sitti's Secrets. These four books are published by Simon
& Schuster. Plans are underway to have books available for sale and autographing following Ms. Nye's presentation. As mentioned earlier, all are welcome, whether or not they are USBBY members. ... Ginny
