Michelle,
I just read your posting. Did you include the Ray Charles cassette reading of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom? It is a must!
You mentioned Jewish family traditions. Are you familiar with Something for Nothing by Phoebe Gilman? The text tells of a boy who is given a blanket by his grandfather. As he grows the blanket is transformed into a coat, vest, handkercheif and button. I'll leave the ending as a surprise. The story is not religious, but the illustrations take place in what I have been told is a Jewish ghetto from olden times. Several other stories take place within the illustrations. It is a lovely picture book, which I use in my classroom. I also gave it to my nephew last year for Channukah.
If you have a chance to see it, let me know what you think!
