Sue Huellmantel of Southfield MI suggested "Something From Nothing" as a good holiday gift book. I would like to second her recommendation and add that the book also makes an excellent read-aloud for groups of preschoolers. I read this book recently to two very large, usually squirmy and active groups of 2, 3, and 4 year olds at a public library story hour and, both times, they were hanging on every word. They could scarcely wait for me to turn the page to see what Grandpa made next from the ever-shrinking piece of cloth. One group of children got involved in the story by trying to guess how Grandpa would fix it each time; the other group listened so intently you could only hear them breathing. I have never before (or since) seen these particular groups so caught up in a story, and I truly came to appreciate the outstanding writing, in addition to the fine illustrations, when I shared it with children. I will be buying several copies of this book to give as gifts myself, as will, I'm certain, many of the families in attendance at the story hour who were delighted to discover a new book which is destined to become an
"old favorite."
