Which new books have you bought for gifts throughout 1995? There are several new books I've already given away several times! One of them is What a Wonderful World illustrated by Ashley Bryan (A Jean Karl Book, Atheneum, 1995; $16.00 USA, $21.50 Canada; 0h9?087-8). This book can be a baby gift, a family present, a house gift or a even a present to yourself! I like to include one of the audiocassettes with Louis Armstrong's rendition of the song along with my book gift, but this isn't necessary for enjoyment of this beautiful book, and I'm not always organized enough in time to get both. I continue to marvel about the challenge Ashley Bryan assumed when he decided to create art to accompany the lyrics Armstrong made so famous. How might he accomplish a literal, artistic illustration of the lyrics and also incorporate a tribute to "Satchmo?" His decision to picture six children preparing props, making puppets and then giving a puppet show featuring the lyrics and Satchmo, too, is nothing short of brilliant. Bryan also achieved a world view, all the while keeping focused on multiple images of hope and love that communicate marvelously on several levels to toddlers, children and adults. I haven't even described this handsome book to you. This was not intended as a proper review, but rather a genuine expression of personal appreciation of a terrific book. Look for it, ask for it, buy it... Oops, the lyrics Ashley Bryan illustrated were written by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele (c1967).
By the way, for some reason the copyright information in the Atheneum edition doesn't indicate this book's publishing history. What a Wonderful World was published by Sundance in 1994 both as a
"big book" and in a little staple-bound paperback edition. Too bad the timing wasn't reversed, because that prior publication renders What a Wonderful World ineligible for the Caldecott Award. Fortunately, it is eligible for the Coretta Scott King Illustration Award, and it's certainly eligible for some of the best books of the year lists. It's already been named one of the CCBC CHOICES of 1995.
What are some of your personal "new book favorites" for gift giving? ... Ginny
