Thanks for the good suggestions. Keep them coming!
As I looked for a second time at the CCBC-NET postings from the past several days, I realized that several of you already wrote about books I was thinking about mentioning this month: Three Stories You Can Read To Your Dog, Officer Buckle and Gloria, Navajo, Benito's Dream Bottle, The Tree Is Older Than You Are... and others.
Everyone's messages are so interesting, and I'm sure we'll be reading more from more people in the CCBC-NET community soon. Thank you! Jane Kurtz: Pulling the Lion's Tail Laura Manthey from San Jose, California, referred to Jane Kurtz' writing. I especially appreciate her recent book Pulling the Lion's Tale illustrated by Floyd Cooper (Simon & Schuster, 1995). Jane Kurtz lived for a significant number of years in rural Ethiopia. Because Ms. Kurtz has this life experience, is a good writer and cares about a tale's cultural origins, her retelling of a folktale often called "The Lion's Whiskers" is very likely the best version available in print at this time.
Artist Floyd Cooper has already gained a reputation for looking closely at related historical and cultural background information before he illustrates a book. Mr. Cooper's illustrations for Pulling the Lion's Tale set a high standard for accuracy as well as artistry, compared to another version of the tale also published this year under the more familiar title. Yumi Heo: Exciting New Artist I want to expand on my previous mention of The Rabbit's Escape, a Korean tale retold by Suzanne Crowder Han and illustrated by Yumi Heo (Henry Holt, 1995) and call your attention to other books also illustrated by artist Yumi Heo. Look for Ms. Heo's work in the companion book to The Rabbit's Escape, which is The Rabbit's Judgement, also retold by Ms. Han (Henry Holt, 1994). Both books are exemplary in their handsome design and production.
Perhaps Rob Reid will add One Afternoon (written and illustrated by Yumi Heo, Orchard, 1994) to his list of books successful with preschoolers. My CCBC colleague Kathleen Horning (who, as you already know, is also a Children's Librarian at Madison Public Library) has used One Afternoon very successfully with three-year-olds; maybe KT will talk expand on that herself.
I find Yumi Heo's work to be fresh and dynamic - and appealing to children. One day last summer, I showed Yumi Heo's first three books to our UW-Madison colleague Peggy Choy. After I went on and on to Peggy about how full of child appeal they are, how exiting, how handsome, look - these bilingual Korean-English tales place the Korean text first - etc., Peggy said, "Yes, and how Korean her art is! So full of subtle Korean humor!" Although I can't pick up on the subtle Korean humor personally, I greatly appreciate One Afternoon, and I'm now on my way to the bookstore to buy both The Rabbit's Judgement and The Rabbit's Escape. Twice I've given One Afternoon as a preschool gift, and I expect to buy it again and again.
Since my conversation with Peggy, Ms. Heo's fourth book Father's Rubber Shoes (Orchard, 1995) was published. Its theme is specifically Korean. This picture book involves a Korean-born father's way of making a new life for his son in North America. It involves comparisons and a father's look back at his childhood in Korea. Father's Rubber Shoes will probably appeal to young school age children rather than to preschoolers, but maybe I'm underestimating preschoolers with that remark. Let me know. Like Yumi Heo's three other books, this one is also full of entertaining details, grand colors and visual surprises.
I hope you will find a chance to become acquainted with Yumi Heo, if you are unfamiliar with her work at this time. And - when you do - I hope you will join me in enjoying the pleasures of her art. ... Ginny
