One of my favorite books of the year is _Benito's Dream Bottle_ by Naomi Shihab Nye, illustrated by Yu Cha Pak. This book is on the list for the CCBC Newbery Discussion, and was one of the books in the Caldecott Discussion. Twice I have bought it for myself and ended up giving it away, so I'm never quite sure if I own a copy or not. Naomi Shihab Nye is a wonderful poet who's published several books of poetry for adults, and is a "poet in the schools" in San Antonio, Texas. Her collection of translated poems from around the world,
_This Same Sky_, grew out of an effort to find "other voices" to bring into the classroom, especially during the Gulf War. She also has a collection just out this year called _The Tree is Older Than You Are_ (and just now it's escaping me whether it's a collection of Mexican, or of Mexican-American poetry -- can someone help me out? It is of poetry written in Spanish, and translated, with both the Spanish and the English appearing.) This is also a great gift book.
In _Benito's Dream Bottle_, Benito explains that everyone has a dream bottle inside them with a little swivel cap that opens when we lie down so that the dreams pour into our heads. He helps his family and neighbors keep their bottles full. Maybe someone with a copy of the book could give an example of the poetic text -- I won't try to reproduce it. I tried reading this book in a group of 20 7 year olds, and it was a bit long, but afterwards I drew a large bottle on an easel pad and everyone came up with one thing to put in "our" dream bottle. That was a big it. I think, in terms of reading, it would do best as a lap book.
Maybe someone who attended the Caldecott Discussion could comment on the illustrations?
