CCBC Caldecott Discussion

I've been asked to tell CCBC-NET subscribers about the outcome of the CCBC Caldecott Award Discussion.
The "winner" was Chato's Kitchen illustrated by Susan Guevara and written by Gary Soto (Putnam, 1995.)
The two "honor books" were: 1) Shortcut by David Macaulay (Houghton Mifflin, 1995) and 2) The Rabbit's Escape illustrated by Yumi Heo and retold by Suzanne Crowder Han. (Henry Holt, 1995)
We had a high-spirited discussion of nineteen books for almost four hours, after which we used the actual committee's balloting procedure (described in an earlier message.) The participants included school library media specialists, school media administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, booksellers, people who teach children's literature, a public librarian, and CCBC staff. Anyone saying "this is not a good year for picture books" would get an argument from the people who were part of that discussion, because they found much to appreciate in the books discussed that evening. They would agree the three books listed above are some of their favorite books of 1995. Look for these books, if you haven't seen them yet.
There's still time to register for one of the upcoming CCBC award discussions: Coretta Scott King: Illustration (Dec. 6); Coretta Scott King: Writing (Dec. 12); Newbery (Dec. 14); Batchelder (Jan. 12); and Amercias (Feb. 7). ... Ginny
