A clarification about my own message: IN THE WOODS (see below) takes place during spring/summer, not winter. ... Ginny

During these days, much of North America is experiencing w-i-n-t-e-r in a major way, so it seems appropriate to comment on two excellent books featuring this season:
     1) SNOWBALLS by Lois Ehlert (Harcourt, 1995) involves making snow figures and decorating them with materials going beyond the typcial carrot-nose. After one sees the "good stuff" with which Lois Ehlert adorned the five snow figures in her book, she offers a grand collage of everything in a double page spread, identifying the cultural as well as the kitchen origins of each item. Colorful, handsome, fun: for children ages 3-7 or so.
     2) IN THE SNOW: WHO'S BEEN HERE? by Lindsay Barrett George is a companion book to IN THE WOODS: WHOSE BEEN HERE? (Both books: Greenwillow, 1995). Each features two white children, William and Cammy with their dog, walking in a wooded area near home. In a series of paired page spreads, they first notice specific traces of wildlife and then they figure out what bird or animal was there recently. Ms. George's marvelous gouache paintings are detailed, but the uncluttered "look" of the page designs and their few words of text can welcome young page turners. The books appeal to children ages four - eight. Although most of the younger ones do not have the background or vocabulary to predict what William & Cammy will see, most will no doubt become more observant on winter walks after enjoying these books.
Each artist is well qualified to create books with winter themes by virtue of her residency in Wisconsin. Lindsay Barrett George once studied at the University of Wisconsin - Madison with John Wilde, and Lois Ehlert has lived in Wisconsin throughout her life. They know the weather and the activities it generates. These books are well produced, making them ideal gift possibilities, too.
This region also offers the winter sport of ice fishing. Aside from The Sawfin Stickleback written by Catherine Friend & illustrated by Dan Yoccarino (Hyperion, 1994), ice fishing stories are few and far between. Which leads me to ask: who has seen the book Winter Rescue written by W.D. Valgardson & illustrated by Ange Zhang
(Canadian edition: Groundwood, 1994; U.S. edition: McElderry, 1995)? Comments? ...Ginny
