First impressions of MIDWIFE'S APPREN

I have started _Catherine called Birdy_three times and have not been able to get into it. BeforeI knew that _ The Midwif's apprentice was the ccbc-net book of the month, the title had popped up on Childlit or some other discussion list or periodical. I read it last week, and I guess that I wasn't impressed with the story. it was rather Dickinsonian. I am aware that childhood during this period of time was not a very pleasant time for many children. We can look at other books such a Giblin's _Chimney Sweeps _ for another view of the life of children.
I agree that the book presents a positive female role model and Alyce is spunky
, but I just wasn't moved by the book at all. It seems to me that the book has a fairy tale, folk tale quality in which the characters seem to be one-dimentional. Alyce is good, the mid wife is bad, the boys are bad, etc.
