I agree wholeheartedly with Carla Kosek (spelling?) that _The Midwife's Apprentice_ is worth gushing about. The fullness of the characters and matter of fact introduction of the medieval way of life reminded me of Elizabeth Gray's Newbery winner? of some years back (I can't think of the name and I'm at work with no way to check). Not Witch of Blackbird Pond but the young boy in medieval England.
