As part of my response to a posting earlier today, I referred to the annual CCBC Coretta Scott King Book Awards Discussions. Someone suggested that I list all six 1995? CCBC Book Award Discussions for CCBC-NET subscribers. I will, but first I'll tell you about the general arrangements for each.
Registration and advance reading are necessary. Each discussion is held in the CCBC Conference Room. Right now - in the CCBC Reading Room - books on each discussion list are grouped together, all set be read in the CCBC and/or checked out overnight or for the weekend. CCBC award discussions are not programs to watch or observe but - rather - they are processes during which everyone shares comments. As the final step in each discussion, participants cast ballots, practicing the balloting process and criteria used by that actual award committee. The results of CCBC award discussions are shared with the chairs of current award committees for information purposes only.
Participants in a CCBC award discussion gain a variety of perspectives on some of the books eligible for one national awards, learn about the criteria for award eligibility, have an opportunity to practice applying their media evaluation & discussion skills related to a particular award, become well acquainted with some of the outstanding books of the year. In addition, participants begin to understand the specific aspects of excellence a particular award acknowledges. Although there is no single definition of Excellence, there are many examples.
All books to be discussed were published in the U.S.A. during 1995.
Here is the 1995? CCBC Book Award Discussion schedule: 1. Caldecott (distinguished illustration by a U.S. resident): Thurs., Nov. 30, 6pm 2. Coretta Scott King - Illustration (excellent illustration by an African-American artist): Wed., Dec. 6, 6pm * 3. Coretta Scott King - Writing (excellent writing by an African-American author): Tues., Dec. 12, 6pm * 4. Newbery (distinguished writing by a U.S. resident): Thurs., Dec. 14, 6pm 5. Batchelder (notable translated books unavailable in English before): Fri., Jan. 12, 3:30-5:30pm 6. Americas (notable Latino literature): Wed., Feb. 7, 6pm *
   * = co-sponsored with the Madison Metropolitan School District
The number of library systems and school districts holding book award discussions grows each year. Some of these involve young readers, although most are planned with adult participants in mind.
If you think you can be here on one or more of the above dates and are reasonably sure you can accomplish the advance preparation for one or more discussions, please contact me, Katy Horning or Megan Schliesman for details about the award discussion(s) in which you are interested. We hope some of you can join us here to discuss books. Meanwhile, we'll continue discussing, asking questions and making comments on CCBC-NET. Cheers! Ginny Moore Kruse
