Message for Kathleen,
I have just purchased The Well and have read all of Taylor's other novels and will respond with some thoughts but I have another matter on my mind at the moment that I thought you might be able to help me with.
Each summer for the past ten years we have run a two week YA workshop at the university here in Eau Claire. Harriet Christy, my predecessor began the workshops in the early 80's and we have scheduled one ever since. They have been enormously successful with librarians and teachers, especially because at every one we have had a visiting YA author. In the past several years, we have had as guests, Lois Duncan, Chris Crutcher, Will Hobbs, Beverly Butler, Alden Carter Stephen Schwandt, Patricia Wrede and Patricia. As you can see we have had some first-rate authors.
For the summer of 96, the dates have been set, June 17 - 28, I would like to invite an author who is not Caucasian. Mildred Taylor, I heard her speak a number of years ago at a NCTE national conference would be my first choice. So my question to you is first, do you know how to reach her, second, does she do one or two day sessions with teachers and librarians and third, do you have any idea what her fees might be. I know she lives in Colorado so expenses might be so great. Also, I have been cooperating with Karen Hoyle Nelson of the Kerlan Library in Minneapolis with some of our recent visitors and Karen is willing to pick up some expenses. Also, I work with the Eau Claire Area Reading Council and they are willing to help with some expenses. Last year Lois Duncan's fees and expenses came to $1200.00 so you see what kind of a budget I have to work with. I can possibly raise a bit more.
Another author whose worksI have just read is Kyoko Mori. I just read and really enjoyed and found to be a profoundly sensitively written novel of hers is Shizuko's Daughter. According to the dust jacket, Kyoko is teaching at St. Norbert's in De Pere, WI. Do you know if she makes school visits? Have you ever invited her to the CCBC as a guest speaker?
I would also be interested in Rosa Guy, Walter Dean Myers, Mildred Pitts Walter, Gary Soto, Michael Dorris and possibly some others. And I would appreciate any suggestions and or information you could give me on this matter.
By the way, I am enjoying the CCBC conversations via E-mail. I am finding information on the messages that I can incorporate into my coursework.
I hope this message reaches you.
Thank You
