I've read both this and CATHERINE. (Alas, not my paperback option.) The new book has more scope to it -- that is to say, it covers a longer time period, and is in general more satisfying.
I have infiltrated a book group at another children's publisher, and they too will be discussing this! So I'll let you know what they say, too -- I believe it's in a few weeks.
