gooseberries

Speaking of Sharon Creech, just yesterday I read (and I can't remember where, I'm racking my brain, but it's just not there!) what "gooseberry" means (one definition anyway):

a third wheel, an extra person in the company of a couple

Did the rest of you know this when reading _Walk Two Moons_? Have I just been in the dark? Did Sharon Creech know this???? I was very surprised that I hadn't heard this before, and very excited, so I wanted to share it with you all.

I was lucky enough to be in the audience for Sharon's speech. It was wonderful, and very moving. She is a great speaker, very natural and down to earth. Very appealing (as evidenced by the author's response). I'm looking forward to reading her new books . . .
