The Well

Mildred Taylor's slim new 92-page book, The Well, is subtitled David's Story. In the author's note preceding the short text, Mildred Taylor writes that the

"...stories my family shared with me [when I was a child] I
have drawn upon to share with people around the world. They
are the stories upon which all the Logan books have been
based. The Well is another such story. It is a story told
by David Logan about his boyhood. Those readers familiar
with my other books about the Logan family - Roll of
Thunder, Hear My Cry; Let the Circle Be Unbroken; The Road
to Memphis: and others - will recognize David as the father
of Cassie, Stacey, Christopher-John, and Little Man..."

We read about the young boy who grew up to be Cassie's father. Readers experience the tensions of a summer drought in Mississippi when the Logans were the only people whose well has not gone dry. Let's guess that it takes place in Mississippi between 191825, I think; does anyone have a better idea of the time than this?

The Well was published last February, so it should be possible to find this book in some of the libraries and certainly in the bookstores. We're assuming that some of you have already read The Well.

What were your first responses to this new addition to what Mildred Taylor calls "the Logan family saga"? Ginny
