Greetings - I've been lurking for a while and now it's time to comment. Every year I coordinate a mock Newbery/Caldecott election for our library system. The Well was one of the first books to be nominated this year for the mock Newbery. The librarian who nominated the book felt that although it was subtitled "David's Story", it was really Hammer's. Any comments? She also wrote, "In this novel of prejudice and human dignity the reader will feel the Logan's fear and righteous anger at the injustice and humiliation they suffer because they are Black". My first reaction to the book was to be blown away by the power of this short, deceptively simple story.
