The jacket art for the two U.S. editions I've seen are so different from each other. The hardcover jacket art by Michele Chessare (U.S. edition: McElderry/Atheneum, 1982) is "haunting," mysterious, full of wonder - for me, an adult. The paperback edition I saw pictures a little boy in a blue velvet suit, etc. - very precious and unappealing for me. Is Chessare's hardcover jacket art too sophisticated? Am I the only person who thinks that the paperback cover looks like a bookstore "baby gothic?" What do you think? How do children seem to respond? And... If you are in direct contact with children: is The Haunting being read by today's children? Do they read one or the other editions on their own? What do you think about the initial appeal of the book, based on its appearance? Regardless of the jacket art or edition, does the book have child appeal? What do child readers say? Tell us...
