It also surprises me that WTM is discussed sometimes in the context of being an American Indian book or one that features a Native American character. Sal seems to be similar to many children who are far removed from their ancestor's original culture - fascinated by aspects of it, but lacking an understanding of meaning and context for the culture. As a child grows, learns and matures, often the cultural context is revealed and enriched -- but that is an experience of age and maturity. This is a story from a thirteen year old's viewpoint, with all the marvelous freshness, naivete and and misconceptions that kids bring to their view of the world, their family and even themselves.
