Salamanca, New York is located on the Seneca Indian Reservation. I think Sharon Creech has spent some time in New York state, so maybe the confusion of Salamanca and Seneca in Chanhassen's mind came from an actual incident in Creech's life.
At any rate, there is some connection between Sal's name and her ancestry, even if it's not what her mother intended.
