It was after I wrote about Mrs. W. that I recalled I'd forgotten to answer the second part of the question--comparing her to Sal's mother. The comparisons came to me, as so many of my best thoughts do, while I was in the shower. However, KT's comparison/contrast was much better than mine!
As for Mrs. Cadaver, I have to say that, while I thought there was friendship and PERHAPS a romantic inclination between her and Sal's father, I never thought she was the reason for Chanhassen's sorrow. I assumed Mr. Hiddle met her after Chanhassen left for Idaho. Chanhassen's depression, I thought, was triggered by that terrible miscarriage, and the realization that she could bear no more children (and never have a chaotically happy household like that of the Finney's).
Of course, Mrs. Cadaver is a Cadaver by marriage, and her husband died in an automobile accident. I really liked Mrs. Cadaver (and her mother and twin brother), but I don't think I'd ever go anywhere with her in a moving vehicle.
