Literature Conference

An extraordinary literature conference will be held on Thursday evening, October 5- Saturday evening, October 7, at Callaway Gardens
(70 mi. south of Atlanta). The theme "The World at Our Doorstep: Building Bridges of Understanding Through Children's and Young Adult Books" will be explored by speakers including:

1. Marc Aaronson (editor of Shizuko's Daughter, American Eyes, Cool Salsa and other books at Henry Holt); 2. Lyll Becerra de Jenkins (Colombian-born author of Celebrating the Hero); 3. Dorothy Briley (editor, Clarion Books); 4. Carmen Diana Dearden (Venezuelan writer); 5. Lulu Delacre (Puerto Rican artist & author); 6. Sheila Hamanaka (Japanese-American artist & writer of The Journey
& other books for children); 7. Graciela Italiano (critic and professor, Dept. of Ethnic & Women's Studies, California Polytechnic Univ., California) 8. Margaret Mahy (New Zealand author of The Changeover, The Haunting, Memory, Catalogue of the Universe, etc.); 9. Patricia McKissack (African-American author of Flossie and the Fox, Mirandy and Brother Wind, The Darkthirty, Sojourner Truth and many other books); 10. Tololwa M. Mollel (Arusha Masai writer & storyteller now living in Canada); 11. Hazel Rochman (author of Against Borders); Gayle Ross (Cherokee author & storyteller); and 12. Suzanne Fisher Staples (former journalist in Pakistan, author of Shabanu). What an opportunity!

The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) is hosting this conference. As a USBBY board member, Ginny can assure you that the conference is carefully planned. Attendees will provide a dynamic mix of classroom teachers, school & public librarians, critics, publishers & editors, college and university teachers of children's & young adult literature. Small group book discussions will be part of the conference schedule.

Conference registration is $150 for USBBY members and $165 for non-members. One day rates are available. The Callaway Gardens conference center is reported to be a superb conference facility with quiet walking paths, biking trails and a butterfly conservancy. Lodging accomodoations at Callaway Gardens are $105/night based upon single or double occupancy.
