Some of us who subscribe to CCBC-NET were in the audience to hear Helen Oxenbury and John Burningham interviewed by the always eloquent Dr. Joan Thron last evening. What insight do you have, as a result of hearing their comments?
In the increasingly market-driven children's book industry, I was amazed to hear Helen Oxenbury say she has been "resting," i.e., explicitly waiting for more than a year to get the right offer or original idea for a book, wanting to do a book that excites and stimulates her imagination so that it will be important enough for her to work on it for 12 months. Although this is not an insight about one or more of their books, it seems hopeful to me today as I reflect on it and remember the promotional crush of the American Booksellers' Association convention earlier this month. Anyone else?
