During the 1995? school year, our upper grade elementary students will be going to see the play Ramona, based on Beverly Cleary's book character. I've been giving some thought to a unit to prepare the students for their trip. One of the resources I've used in the past is a filmstrip kit on Beverly Cleary produced by Random House. In viewing it, I can't help but notice the resemblance between Beverly Cleary as a child and the illustrator's depiction of Ramona. I've been wondering if the illustrator was shown these childhood pictures before illustrating the Ramona books. Does anyone know? I've started re-reading Cleary's autobiography, A Girl From Yamhill, to see if any mention is made of this. Any insight would be appreciated.
