Beginning July 1st, let's discuss Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
(HarperCollins, 1994).
Please try to read Walk Two Moons between now and then - or very soon
- if you have not already read this novel. Let's wait until July 1st to begin commenting, so that people who want to read the book between now and then will be able to participate fully.
At least two of our subscribers served on the Newbery Committee that selected Walk Two Moons to win the 1995 Newbery Award. Although they cannot speak for the committee, they have agreed to participate actively in our discussion as guest discussants. They are the 1995 Newbery Award Chair and CCBC Librarian Kathleen Horning and Newbery Committee member Marge Loch-Wouters. If others from that committee are CCBC-NET subscribers, please let us all know, because you will be guest discussants, as well.
The Horn Book (July / August 1995) will publish the Newbery Award acceptance speech of Sharon Creech, as well as something biographical about her. Her speech will also be published in the Summer, 1995, issue of the Journal of Youth Services in Libraries (ALSC/ALA). Good insights can be found there, I'm certain.
Don't be reluctant to dive into this discussion. Here in the CCBC, we suggest in our monthly and annual awards book discussions that individuals are free to use their own perspectives and their own vocabulary to discuss books. It's the responsibility of other participants to ask for clarification if we do not understand certain terms, perspectives, approaches to discourse about a particular book. I hope you know that everyone is invited into this discussion. We know you are participating actively by reading the postings; we will all benefit from your actively expressed comments about this book and others for which we'll schedule discussion in the future.
By the way, you are welcome to introduce books you want on which you want to comment or invite comments at any time. This can always be one function of CCBC-NET. One advantage of a scheduled discussion can be providing everyone interested with the opportunity to be ready to discuss the same book at the at the same time. This does not in any way keep you from discussing other books on CCBC-NET. Cheers!
